I have read many times the importance of community - but never really understood the meaning until the last few months. Community builds us up, connects us, when we’re feeling lonely or we’re feeling lost. When choosing to include community in our life’s purpose it’s really about how you can give back…and even a small way, how that can create the biggest impact. Students from Brown University’s Summer Pre-College program visited Erase to hear our current artist, Aymar Ccopacatty speak about his art - his work….his life’s purpose. Students in this particular course, “Crafting Culture” are those who are interested in pursuing a degree in anthropology, archaeology, and museum studies.

Among the most valuable things that Aymar mentioned to the students was the importance of always asking questions — questioning everything, seeking… that’s how we will ultimately learn more and learn more about ourselves, our community and how we can then make things better. Art doesn’t often provoke the feeling of a responsibility to be considerate, conscious human beings in society. But, Of course, Aymar’s work does just that.

Community has helped remind me of the things that matter most. Today, it can be especially difficult to find a voice or build impactful, considerate spaces that uplift. Aymar's work inspires students to think differently - to see plastic, waste, trash as something that can be transformed.

Thank you so much to Brown University Pre-College, Instructor Daiana Rivas-Tello, and Aymar for inspiring.
